Galle Fort

HIGHLIGHT

A stunning 17th-century Dutch colonial fortress on Sri Lanka's southwest coast. Walk cobblestone streets lined with boutique hotels, art galleries, and cafes, all within 130 acres of perfectly preserved ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Exploring Galle's

Colonial Legacy

Galle Fort stands as one of the best-preserved examples of a fortified city built by Europeans in South Asia. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1588, it was extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onwards. The fort's massive ramparts, bastions, and gates remain intact, creating a living museum of colonial architecture.

Within the fort walls, narrow cobblestone streets wind past Dutch Reformed churches, British administrative buildings, and traditional merchant houses. The iconic Galle Lighthouse, built in 1939, stands sentinel at the fort's edge. Walking the ramparts at sunset has become a beloved ritual, offering spectacular ocean views and cooling sea breezes.

Today's Galle Fort seamlessly blends history with contemporary life. Colonial-era buildings have been transformed into boutique hotels, art galleries, jewelry shops, and restaurants serving everything from traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry to international cuisine. The National Maritime Museum displays artifacts from shipwrecks and maritime trade routes.

The fort comes alive during cultural festivals and cricket matches at the historic Galle International Stadium, one of the world's most picturesque test cricket venues. Local lace makers, mask carvers, and gem traders continue centuries-old traditions, while contemporary artists showcase their work in converted warehouses and restored mansions.
