Yala National Park Leopard
PREMIER WILDLIFE DESTINATION

Yala National Park

HIGHLIGHT

Sri Lanka's most visited national park, famous for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Spanning 979 square kilometers of diverse ecosystems, Yala offers thrilling safaris through scrub jungle, lagoons, and rocky outcrops.

Exploring Yala's

Wild Kingdom

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's flagship wildlife reserve, renowned worldwide for its remarkable leopard population. With an estimated 40-50 leopards in Block 1 alone, Yala boasts the highest density of leopards anywhere in the world. These magnificent big cats are most active during early morning and late afternoon safaris.

Beyond leopards, the park hosts an incredible diversity of wildlife. Herds of elephants roam the plains, often gathering near waterholes. Sloth bears, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and crocodiles thrive in various habitats. The park's lagoons attract over 200 bird species, including painted storks, pelicans, and the rare black-necked stork.

The landscape varies from dense jungle to open grasslands, rocky outcrops to coastal beaches. Ancient rock temples and ruins scattered throughout the park add historical intrigue to wildlife viewing. The Sithulpawwa Rock Temple, dating back to the 2nd century BC, offers panoramic views over the wilderness.

Safari experiences are conducted in rugged 4x4 vehicles with experienced tracker-guides who know the leopards' territories and behaviors. Dawn and dusk game drives offer the best wildlife sightings as animals emerge during cooler hours. The park's five blocks provide different ecosystems to explore, though Block 1 remains most popular for leopard sightings.
